percent complete bar
  • I am working with a chart with multiple instruments. Each instrument has a main virtual summary bar with maybe 2 specific tests that are "on top" in a different color to show where they fit in the flow.

All of the instruments are showing a percent complete bar to the current date, although only one task on one instrument has been statused. It is also behind schedule so shouldn't be up to the time-now line anyway.

I know how to turn off the % complete bar for the view, but I'd like to keep it if I can fix it. I'm not sure what I have done that's sending the wrong data points.

Can you give me a suggestion as to what to look for? I built a dummy schedule and the % complete bar worked correctly on that???

    Thank you!

  • Hi Roxanne,

Can you clarify if the invididual tasks are showing incorrect percent complete values or if the virtual summary task is showing an incorrect percent complete value? One way to tell for sure is to (temporarily) drag the tasks off the virtual summary task to see which ones are showing percent complete, and which are not.

In general, OnePager Pro isn't going to differ from Microsoft Project in terms of the percent complete values that it shows. However, with a virtual summary task, there may be a situation where one task is overshadowing another, though I don't think so.

Let me know if you can tell which specific tasks are showing the percent complete erroneously, and we should be able to diagnose your schedule from there.

  • Hi Safford,

I "unmade" the virtual summary bar for one of the instruments. None of the tasks had any status on them (which is correct). When I re-made the virtual summary task, the status went back to the time-now line???

  • Thanks for the additional detail, Roxanne. That makes sense.

One of the features of virtual summary tasks is that they show the percent complete to "time now" by default. This is because Microsoft Project doesn't provide a weighting of all of the tasks contained in the virtual summary task to say which sub-task's percent complete should drive the overall completion of the VST.

If you would like to override this default setting, you can right click on any vistual summary task and manually set its percent-complete to any value you choose.
  • I'm not sure that answers the question. I would understand if even one of the tasks had some status, but NONE of them do and yet it brings me to current?

In the meantime, I'll try to remember to change the status bar manually. Thanks.

BTW, when will the new version of OPP be released?
  • I agree that we may want to change the logic on virtual summary tasks a little. In cases where there are non-zero percent complete values, setting % values to today may still make sense. But as you mentioned, if there is no percent for any of the tasks contained in a virtual summary task, it might make sense to default it to 0% or something like that. I'll log an enhancement so our team can look into this further.

The other alternative is that you can selectively turn percent complete off in situations where it doesn't make sense. Right-click on the virtual summary task, go to Decorations->Percent Complete->Do not show it. This way, you can turn off percent complete for some tasks, but not for other tasks where it may be more relevant.

OnePager Pro 4.1 is nearing completion of the beta phase. From there, it's just a matter of having our tech writers put the finishing touches on the parts of the documentation that have changed based on beta feedback. We are shooting for rolling OnePager Pro 4.1 out to our user base next week.
